Rearrange the Furniture

Sometimes the existing bedroom layout might be the best, but it’s still worthy exploring other options. Good news is, you can always move the furniture back to its original position. There are several nuances to keep in mind.

Here are some of the bedrooms from my last project. For illustration, I specifically re-arranged the furniture to make it worse.

Make sure pathways are clear for smooth movement. Try not to place the bed in front of the entry door.

Avoid placing all the large heavy elements on one side of the room next to each other. This will make the room look unbalanced.

Keep Proportions in Mind: Ensure that the size of the furniture matches the room’s dimensions. Oversized furniture in a small room can make it feel cramped, while tiny pieces in a large room can look out of place.

Avoid Blocking Doors and Windows: Ensure doors and windows can open fully and aren’t obstructed by furniture. This maintains the room’s flow and keeps it feeling open and spacious.

If space allows, divide your room into different zones, like a sleeping area and a reading nook. This adds functionality and makes the room feel more organized.

Before moving heavy furniture, try mapping out your layout with painter’s tape or using a room planner app. This helps you visualize the space and avoid unnecessary effort.

Ultimately, your comfort is key. Arrange the room in a way that feels right to you, even if it breaks a few traditional design rules.

Create a cozy reading nook

Not all bedrooms will allow the creation of a reading nook. The flats I have designed last 7 years working in different studios around Europe are getting smaller and smaller. As the price per square meter goes up, the developers still want to sell properties under certain categories, for example, 2-bedroom apartments, 3-bedroom apartments etc.

If they allow architects to be generous with room sizes, it means that the buyers will cost it more.

You get the point.

However, if you have the space for it, having a reading nook is one of the best things you can have in your bedroom.

Update Bedding

This might sound so simple, but it does make a difference.

Choose colors that complement your room’s existing palette. Neutral tones like white, beige, or gray are versatile and timeless, while bold colors or patterns can make a statement. Think about how the bedding will blend with your walls, curtains, and other decor.

If your room already has a lot of patterns, solid-colored bedding can help balance the look. If your room is more minimal, patterned bedding can add visual interest. Stripes, florals, and geometric designs are all popular choices.

Layering is Key: Consider getting a mix of items, like sheets, duvet covers, and throw blankets, that you can layer for added texture and warmth. This not only looks luxurious but also allows you to adjust for different seasons.

Quality Matters: Invest in the best quality you can afford. Higher thread counts generally indicate softer, more durable sheets. Look for long-staple cotton, like Egyptian or Pima, for lasting comfort.

If you live in a place with varying seasons, consider having different sets of bedding for winter and summer. Lighter materials like percale or linen are great for summer, while heavier options like flannel or a down duvet work well in colder months.

Ensure your bed cover fits your bed properly. It should cover the mattress completely and hang over the sides slightly for a polished look. If you have a tall mattress, you might want to consider an oversized bed cover.

Consider going monochrome: if you have a bedroom with a specific color, get the bedding with the exact same color for a dramatic look.

DIY Art

Create your own artwork or frame some of your favorite prints, photos, or even fabric swatches. This adds a personal touch and can be done inexpensively.

If you are into painting, you can create acrylic artworks yourself. Otherwise, you can always purchase a beautiful printable from etsy or Gumroad and print it yourself.

Upgrade Lighting

Updating your bedroom lighting can dramatically change the ambiance and functionality of the space. Choosing the lighting should not be intimidating, but here’s what to watch out for:

Use a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting. Overhead lights provide general illumination, while bedside lamps or wall sconces are perfect for reading. Accent lighting, like a string of fairy lights or a small table lamp, adds a cozy, decorative touch.

Consider the color temperature of your bulbs. Warm white (2700K–3000K) creates a relaxing atmosphere, ideal for bedrooms. If you need brighter light for tasks like reading, opt for a daylight bulb (4000K–5000K).

I don’t understand why not everybody has dimmable lights in the bedroom. Installing dimmable lights gives you control over the brightness, allowing you to adjust the lighting to suit different moods and activities.

Consider smart bulbs or smart plugs, which allow you to control your lighting with a smartphone or voice commands. This adds convenience and lets you create lighting presets for different times of day.

If replacing fixtures isn’t in the budget, simply updating your lampshades can refresh the room. Choose shades that match your decor or add a pop of color or texture.

If you have a dressing area, desk, or reading nook, make sure to include focused task lighting in those areas. Adjustable lamps or wall-mounted sconces work well for this purpose.

Don’t forget to match the lights to your decor: Ensure that the style of your lighting fixtures complements the overall design of your bedroom. Whether you prefer modern, industrial, vintage, or rustic styles, your lighting should blend seamlessly with your decor.

Incorporate Greenery

Add some plants or flowers to breathe life into your room. If you’re not into maintenance, go for realistic faux plants.

My problem with this idea is that plants leaves might get dusty if not cleaned regularly. So if you have allergies (like I do), then you should be careful about them.

Declutter and Organize

If I could choose one advice from the list, this would be it. No matter how much you color the walls or add lights, if your bedroom is cluttered, it won’t give you peace of mind.

One of my favorite ways to keep the bedroom organized is to have as many drawers as I can. Then, in the drawers have drawer organizers.

My second favorite way to keep the bedroom organized is to have baskets for things that I often need at hand but feel lazy to fold every time after use. Throw blankets go under this category.

Mirrors

Mirrors are both, functional and decorative. a thoughtfully chosen mirror can really transform your bedroom vibe.

Choose a mirror that suits the scale of your room. A large, full-length mirror can make a small room feel more spacious, while a smaller mirror can serve as a decorative accent without overwhelming the space.

Select a mirror frame that complements your bedroom decor. For a modern look, go with a sleek, frameless design. If your room has a more traditional or vintage vibe, consider a mirror with an ornate or wooden frame and for artsy vibes consider a mirror with bold colorful frame.

Ultimately, the mirror you choose should reflect your personal style. Whether it’s a bold, statement piece or a subtle addition, it should enhance the overall aesthetic of your bedroom.

Change Curtains or Blinds

I know, this sounds like cliche but here we go: changing curtains or blinds can refresh your bedroom on a budget.

Changing your curtains can have a big impact on the look and feel of your bedroom.

The fabric you choose will affect how much light comes in and the overall mood of the room. Lightweight fabrics like sheer cotton or linen create an airy, breezy feel, while heavier materials like velvet or blackout curtains add warmth and block light for a cozier, more private space.

hoose a color that complements your bedroom’s color scheme. Neutral tones like white, beige, or gray are versatile and timeless, while bold colors or patterns can make a statement. Consider whether you want the curtains to blend in or stand out as a focal point.

If your bedroom has a lot of patterns, solid-colored curtains can provide balance. If your room is more minimal, patterned curtains can add interest and texture. Stripes, florals, or geometric patterns are popular options.

Curtains that hang from ceiling to floor can make your room feel taller and more elegant. Measure your windows carefully and consider going for curtains that are slightly longer for a dramatic, puddled look, or just touching the floor for a neat, tailored appearance.

The curtain rod and hardware should complement your curtain style and room decor. For a classic look, choose a rod with decorative finials. If you prefer something more modern, go for a simple, streamlined rod.

Accessorize

Add a Statement Piece: Incorporate a statement accessory, like a large vase, a unique sculpture, or a bold piece of decor. This can serve as a focal point in the room and add a touch of sophistication or whimsy.

Personalize with Photos: Display framed photos of loved ones or memorable moments. This adds a personal touch and makes the room feel more intimate and cozy.

Add a Stylish Rug: A well-chosen rug can tie the room together and add warmth underfoot. Choose a rug that complements your color scheme and is the right size for your space.

Conclusion

These small changes can make a big impact, creating a bedroom that feels fresh, inviting, and truly reflective of your personal style—all without breaking the bank.
