Best Lights Above Kitchen Island

A common misconception is that decorative pendants are the best lights above the kitchen island. You might see pictures in magazines or on Pinterest featuring large eye-catchy pendants above kitchen islands and you might think that this is the way to go.

However, as an architect I can’t entirely agree with that and here is why:

They are not functional for a versatile space

Kitchen islands are multifunctional spaces used for food preparation, cooking, dining, and even working. Decorative pendants can sometimes create shadows or uneven lighting, making it difficult to perform tasks efficiently. There are better alternatives which I will discuss below.

Cleaning & maintenance

Decorative pendants often come with intricate designs and materials that can collect dust and grease, especially in a kitchen environment. Frequent cleaning is necessary to maintain their appearance, which can be troublesome and time-consuming. Choosing lighting options that are easier to clean can help maintain a pristine kitchen look without added hassle.

Scale and space

Decorative pendants can sometimes be bulky or hang at a height that interferes with the open, airy feeling you desire in a kitchen.

They can obstruct views, make the space feel cramped, and even pose a hazard if not properly positioned.

There are 5 better alternatives that you can use above kitchen island instead.

Downlights

Downlights provide consistent, even lighting across the entire kitchen island, ensuring that all tasks can be performed with ease. This reduces shadows and enhances visibility, making the kitchen a more functional workspace.

Downlights are typically recessed into the ceiling, which means they do not take up visual or physical space. This helps maintain an open, uncluttered look, which is especially desirable in modern kitchen designs.

With their simple design and placement, downlights are easier to clean and maintain compared to intricate decorative pendants.

Keep in mind that downlights need to be strategically placed to ensure even coverage across the entire kitchen island.

Choose downlights that offer the right color temperature and brightness for the kitchen: usually, cooler lights are preferred for kitchen, but make sure to take into account the overall ambiance of the space.

Ceiling-mounted can lights

This option is especially useful if you have a concrete ceiling where the recessed lights are not an option.

Ceiling-mounted spotlights or so-called can lights function similarly as the downlights.

Track lights

Track lights can be adjusted and directed to illuminate specific areas of the kitchen island. This flexibility allows for customized lighting solutions that can adapt to various tasks, whether it’s cooking, dining, or working.

Track lights offer a sleek, contemporary look that can complement a variety of kitchen designs. They provide a clean and streamlined appearance, enhancing the overall aesthetic without being overly intrusive.

With multiple light heads on a track, you can ensure even distribution of light across the entire kitchen island. This eliminates shadows and provides ample illumination for all activities.

Make sure the bulbs provide a pleasant, natural light that enhances the kitchen environment.

Track lights can collect dust and grease over time, especially in a kitchen setting. Make sure to clean them regularly to maintain their appearance and functionality. Choose fixtures that are easy to clean and maintain.

Where to put decorative lights in the kitchen

If you are determined to include decorative lights in your kitchen, my recommendation would be to install wall lights. This is a great way to add warmth, elegance and sophisticated detail to your kitchen and keep the outer edges of the space gently illuminated.

Overall, wall lights, when installed properly, create a feeling of larger space and intimacy.

Choose wall lights that complement the overall design of your kitchen. The fixtures should match the style, whether it’s modern, traditional, or transitional, to create a cohesive look.

If you are into farmhouse style, then this light might be for you. Here is another beautiful option as well.

For contemporary minimalist vibes, I have found this light for you.

Conclusion

Kitchen islands are one of the most important parts of modern kitchen. Due to their multifunctional nature they are not best suited for large pendants that are featured on design magazines. Often times, other more modest options work best!
