Farmhouse kitchens have been there for a while already and continue to be trendy. The popularity of this style arises from its features of this style: cozy, warm, and welcoming. Farmhouse kitchens look very approachable and inviting.
The design features are often rooted in the regional culture. For example, the English country farmhouse kitchen looks and feels different than the French one. This is why the farmhouse kitchens are so versatile and very far from boring. Lately, modern Farmhouse style kitchens are becoming more popular than traditional-style ones.
What is a farmhouse-style kitchen?
The farmhouse style originates from old agrarian country houses or structures all over the world. In the US this style is rooted in the old barns with cows and horses or houses that were so common in the late 18th-19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. These spaces were filled with everyday furniture pieces which were low-style versions of classic high-end furniture pieces, such as Windsor back chairs, milk-painted furniture, Victorian wicker, and dining table.
Materials that were used in traditional farmhouses were cheap and easily accessible: wood, brick, terracotta tiles, stone, plaster, and simple fabrics like small florals, checks, and ginghams. Traditional Farmhouses used basic plumbing with exposed fixtures. The decor used in those spaces was mainly items with daily-use functions, tools made of leather, metal, or paint, but you could also find items such as a few books or family portraits.
In modern farmhouse-style kitchens, the look is achieved by using traditional vintage elements similar to old ones, that are integrated with into spaces with modern comfort. Oftentimes, the decor elements also include early-industrial farm-aged tools, distressed surfaces,
The color palette of a Farmhouse-style kitchen often includes greys, whites, cremes, blacks, or dark bold colors when it comes to cabinetry: deep blue or green. Exposed wood beams or brick surfaces are very characteristic of this style.
Modern-day Farmhouse kitchens are cozy inviting spaces with every bit of contemporary comfort.
#1 CHEER UP WHITE CABINETS WITH TEXTILE, TEXTURE, AND COLORS
I love how the daylight is amplified with the whiteness of the cabinets and the wall and yet contrasted with the wood flooring and beams, and the green carpet texture. The airy daylight emphasizes the beautiful classic faucet that looks almost like a swan! how lovely!
I love how the wood beams’ structure is covering the space. It looks like a skeleton that holds up the white ceiling.
I love how the color of the furniture coordinates with the color of the abstract painting on the wall. Everything looks so intentional, yet effortless.
#2 BLUE AND LIGHT WOOD COMBO WITH RED ACCENTS
It’s not a secret that blue and red are one of the most beautiful color combinations. The neutral wood color acts like a background not to distract us from perceiving that combination. The oven and the range hood emphasize the spot and make it a focal point of the kitchen. It’s planned beautifully.
The light colors are perfectly coordinated with the splash of red on the kitchen counters. And how about those airy shelves on the window? Are not they mega cute?
#3 WARM UP WHITE KITCHEN WITH NATURAL WOOD, AND BRONZE
White kitchens are considered classic. White is beautiful, white is timeless and elegant. However, if not balanced properly, it might look too sterile. This kitchen farmhouse kitchen features white cabinetry combined with wood shelves and bronze elements used on furniture and lights. The wood flooring further warms up the space and makes it more welcoming.
The black handles and the modern furniture emphasize that this is a modern farmhouse look.
#4 MAKE A STATEMENT WITH WALLPAPER
Waterproof wallpapers have no competition when it comes to adding character to the kitchen. Options are endless: organized patterns, florals, fruits, vegetable illustrations… classic, modern or chic. you name it. The good thing is that you do not have to commit to it: most of the peel-and-stick waterproof wallpapers can be easily removed or changed.
I still recommend keeping at least 15centimeters of backsplash for practical reasons.
#5 BABY BLUE SHIPLAP BACKSPLASH
I absolutely love shiplap backsplash. They add texture to the space and create vertical likes that make the space look taller. The shelves across the window are perfectly decorated with yellow furniture that coordinates with the ochre color of the wood cabinets.
You have to agree, this kitchen looks like Van Gogh would paint it.
#6 DARK BLUE CABINETS & BLACK MARBLE BACKSPLASH COMBO
This design works. And it works so well. Let me explain why: The deep blue cabinets combined with the black marble backsplash and countertop create a continuous horizontal stripe along the walls. That stripe is contrasted with the white walls, ceiling, and light wood flooring.
The solid colors create a neutral background for the decor that goes on top of the horizontal shelf.
It’s beautiful.
#7 OPEN UP PART OF BASE CABINETS
Opening up part of the kitchen base cabinets and transforming them into open shelves might give you more opportunities to showcase your cute pottery and keep them accessible easier.
You don’t have to showcase just functional items. Decor elements are not less important! Put that antique vase in there!
#8 OPEN SHELVES INSTEAD OF CLOSED UPPER CABINETRY
Open shelves give you endless opportunities to decorate your kitchen with functional or decorative items. Ideally, you want to keep the color scheme curated and make sure the items are display-worthy. This is a great example: the white kitchen cabinets create a neutral background, and the blue glassware creates a beautiful mellow splash of color.
#9 PERFECT COMBO OF WOOD, GREY AND ETHNIC TEXTILE IN A FARMHOUSE KITCHEN
This is a beautiful traditional farmhouse kitchen with modern elements. The grey cabinets mixed with wood create a classic look, while the ethnic textile rug emphasizes the country-ness of the design. How about the range hood? It’s huge, and it’s beautiful.
#10 MINTY GREEN CABINETS
Fresh like a mint. I am happier after looking at these mint cabinets complemented with the blue backsplash and butcher block countertop of the kitchen island.
The purple tones of the textile perfectly complete the fresh vibes of this kitchen. However, it’s not only about the colors: The symmetry! Do you notice how the cabinets, lights, and kitchen island chairs are mirrored? That creates a symmetrical perspective and makes the space look orderly.
Again: a beautiful combo of mint green and purple tones (on the rug).
#11 ALL SHADES OF GREEN CABINETS
Green cabinets can add so much freshness to classic cabinets. The color perfectly balances the classic look with modernity.
Deep green kitchen cabinets combined with brass hardware, lights, and faucet – This looks almost like a jewelry color combination. I love how the designer used white open upper cabinetry instead of the same deep green: this trick makes the space so much lighter and brighter.
I love how Lisette Voute kept the color scheme consistent: wood, white and green. That’s it. only two types of metals are used for hardware and lights, and the light fixtures are emphasizing the kitchen island.
This kitchen is extremely cozy and traditional. Yet, there is pretty much everything a modern man would need, and it’s planned perfectly: an uninterrupted work triangle with a lot of counter space. I love how the pink dishware is coordinated with the mint green cabinet color.
#12 LEAVE OUT PART OF UPPER CABINETRY TO OPEN UP SPACE AND SHOW OFF SOME ART
Who said there is no place for art in the kitchen? nobody. This mint green kitchen with white upper cabinets is a perfect example. Instead of maximizing the storage space, the designer compromised some space to keep the beautiful art in the kitchen. The plants and decor elements just right under the painting make it clear that this corner is staged with clear design intent.
#13 FARMHOUSE KITCHEN WITH YELLOW WALLS AND YELLOW CABINETS
When I first looked at this kitchen I was like: Ugh, what’s going on here!
However, when I looked closer I started to see and appreciate the colorful space. farmhouse kitchen wall color can definitely be the same as the cabinetry, but a bit lighter works always better. One of the nicest farmhouse wall ideas is the combo of yellow cabinets and cream wall paint.
#14 BRING DOWN THE UPPER CABINETS ALL THE WAY TO THE COUNTERTOP
This corner element that we see on this image has become extremely popular lately. Not only because it gives more storage space, but also because it creates a continuous corner from floor to ceiling, and visually it makes more sense.
#15 GORGEOUS COMBO OF WOOD, BLUE, AND CORAL RED
This is one of my favorite color combinations. Baby blue kitchen cabinets contrasted with red. The rest is neutral and mellow. The red range is further emphasized with a hood and both together create a focal point of this kitchen.
#16 CHARM OF VINTAGE FURNITURE
Hands down, I am in love with this space. Neither because it is directly connected with a beautiful green yard, nor because of that beautiful charming chandelier above the vintage table, but because the whole space is extremely well-curated, and there is nothing I would take out from the scene or add to it.
#17 ART IN KITCHEN
#18 OPEN SHELVES IS NOT THE ONLY OPTION TO DISPLAY YOUR CUTE DISHWARE
I have a whole article that discusses the advantages and disadvantages of open shelving. While you might want to display your cute well-curated dishware, the grease and dust in the kitchen make it a lot of work to keep up with the cleaning routine of the displayed items.
A great alternative is glass door cabinetry on upper shelves: you get all the benefits of the open shelving without having to clean the dishes almost daily.
Definitely worth considering.
#19 CLASSIC WHITE
No farmhouse kitchen blog post would be complete without mentioning a classic white kitchen. And this one is an excellent example of it: traditional shaker style cabinetry with brass hardware, faucet and lights that emphasize the gorgeous kitchen island covered with marble countertops. And look at that pot filler. Seems like all the details have been well thought out.
#20 TWO TONED KITCHEN CABINETS
Two-toned kitchen cabinets are real deals for farmhouse kitchen designs. The color combination possibilities are almost endless: you can complement or contrast the colors. However, I would suggest keeping the upper cabinets lighter and the base cabinets – darker, not the other way around.
What color combinations can you use for two-toned farmhouse kitchen cabinets? black and mint green, different shades of green, wood and beige, wood and grey, wood and greige..
#21 CONTRAST CABINETS WITH ISLAND COLOR
Kitchen islands can become the heart of the kitchen. You can emphasize them by contrasting them to the cabinetry color and adding lights above the island. A great combination of colors can be black vs white, beige vs pumpkin yellow, beige vs. mint green, or beige vs grey.
#22 DON’T BE AFRAID TO COMBINE BLUE AND GREEN
Green cabinets are often combined with blue dishware or other decor items. They make a beautiful combination, especially if the rest of the space is kept pretty mellow and neutral.
#23 ADD SOME TEXTURE USING STRIPES
striped rugs, or striped wallpaper: both can be a great way to add texture and pattern to the kitchen. Stripes are one of my favorites for some reason.
#24 DINING TABLE RIGHT AT THE LARGE WINDOW
#25 A VERY CLASSIC FARMHOUSE KITCHEN COMBO: BLUE, GOLD AND PATTERNED TILES
I’m not going to finish this post without mentioning classic blue shaker style cabinets combined with brass hardware, a sink that is right at the window, and a patterned ceramic tile floor. This look is timeless, and it will likely never go out of style.
#26 COORDINATE THE METALS: FRIDGE AND THE ISLAND
How about mixing the shaker cabinets and some metal surfaces? You should agree, this unusual combination works pretty well. I do not even want to imagine anything else instead of this beautiful stainless steal kitchen island that seems to be extremely functional as well.
#27 WHITE RECLAIMED WOOD FLOORING FOR ELEGANT COZINESS
But, actually, how practical is it to have wood flooring in the kitchen? even more: paint it white! I think it depends: on who works in the kitchen, and how intense the cooking process is all the time. White wood flooring can definitely work, you just have to be a bit more careful.
#28 KITCHEN NOOK COMPLETES THE CABINETRY
Not to mention this beautiful reclaimed wood flooring and beams, the whole kitchen speaks coziness. How about sitting in that kitchen nook while your girlfriend is cooking pancakes? Did you already feel the smell of freshly brewed coffee? Then we are on the same page. Let’s continue.
#29 SWITCH UP SOME OF THE CABINET DOORS WITH CUTE TEXTILE CURTAINS
I think those curtains make this traditional kitchen more approachable. Textiles always make the space more cozy and welcoming, but in this case, it’s so.. so country.
#30 BE MINDFUL ABOUT THE DISHWARE
Glass door cabinets are a great middle ground between closed upper cabinetry and open shelving, which might not be so practical. Being mindful of the color scheme of the dishware is important. Using the same color is the way to go in most cases. And look, how the blue color of the dishware is contrasted with the brown color of the metal light fixtures.
I spent a lot of time gathering this information, and thank you for reading this post all the way to the end. I hope these examples and tips will make your journey more mindful, intentional, and easy. If you find value in this post, please, consider sharing it with your friends.
